Given the skyrocketing prices of fossil fuels, it can be expected that our energy costs will also increase because of the dependence of power producers on these non-renewable sources of energy. To be able to mitigate high energy costs, you must be able to find ways to use energy efficiently and save energy. Some ways are mentioned in the following sections.
Saving on lighting
One effective way of saving energy is to use natural light as much as possible. You can do this by opening your windows so that light can come into your home, or you can choose to do your reading on the porch or in the garden. You should also turn off the lights in rooms that are not being used. With regard to your lights, it would be a good idea to just use fluorescent lights, as they use energy more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs. It is also advisable to clean your light bulbs regularly because dirt can reduce illumination.
Appliances
For appliances with motors, such as refrigerators, it is advisable that you place them at least five inches from the wall so that the heat generated by these motors can be released efficiently. You should also do regular cleaning on your appliances as dirt can interfere with the functionality of the appliance. When purchasing new appliances, you should buy appliances with energy efficiency features, as they use energy more efficiently than the older models of appliances.
Saving energy while cooking
When cooking, it is a good idea to prepare all the ingredients that you need before you turn on the gas or electric stove, as delays waste energy. This will involve thawing frozen food and doing the cutting required before you turn on your stove or oven. Covering your pots while they are on the stove also saves energy, as heat is kept inside the pot. It is also a good idea to turn off the stove when you are about to finish cooking, as the heat that is left will be enough to finish cooking the food.
We can save on our energy consumption in a number of small ways that can add up to significant savings on consumption and costs. Given the rise in the cost of energy, these small ways will continue to play a big part in our efforts at saving energy.
